How Corporate Governance And The Breakdown Of Each Sector...

Introduction Corporate Governance is the system of rules, practices and processes in which a company is controlled and directed. â€Å"It essentially involves balancing the interests of the many stakeholders in the company.† (Investopedia). These can include shareholders, management, customers, suppliers, financiers, government and the community depending on the type of company. It provides the framework for attaining any company’s objectives. As western culture transitions into a more globalized economy, a set of standards enhancing corporate character should be evaluated. These standards are created within an organization to add long term value for the shareholders, and should be managed on a regular basis to achieve desired goals that†¦show more content†¦This resulted in a wide variation in governance across U.S. firms. Firms with weaker shareholder rights earned lower returns, had poorer operating performance and were valued lower overall. Multinational corporations used a number of methods to ensure their foreign subsidiary managers owned shares of their firm to align their interests with those of the corporation. These managers were also offered bonuses in the form of stock that they were unable to sell for a few years to encourage them to focus on the goal of maximization of the stock price when making decisions for the subsidiaries. Stock ownership for upper level management is limited, thus resulting in the decision to protect their jobs even if it reduces the stock price. An example of this would be a manager deciding to expand their subsidiary in order to justify their position, even if it affects the values of the corporation overall. Governance is to ensure that managerial decisions serve the shareholder’s interests. Confucius (1950 words) Essay Example For Students

Confucius (1950 words) Essay ConfuciusAs Confucius philosophy still remains in the heart of many Chinese people. Hisimages of the greatest professional teacher of all time, the greatestphilosopher in Chinese history and his influence toward the future and the past2000 years of Chinese civilization has made his thought the essence of theChinese culture. He always said the importance of teaching could change thefuture of the civilization. And he also encouraged his students to explore thevarious things to learn, but be very selective and careful. The purpose ofConfucius teaching was practical and designed to help each person improve hischaracter and conduct, and perhaps become prepared for an official position inthe court. According to one passage in the Analects, Confucius taught fourthings: culture, conduct, loyalty, and truthfulness.1 Culture consisted ofliterature and music. Confucius suggested the value of each: Let a man bestimulated by poetry, established in character by the rules of propriety, andperfected by music.2 These pursuits were means by which one may achievethe higher ideal of following the Way. The gentleman extensively studiesliterature and restrains himself with the rules of propriety. Thus he will notviolate the Way.3 And also Set your heart upon the Way. Supportyourself by its virtue. Rely on goodness. Find recreation in the arts.4Confucius put the moral duties before the arts as the essential activities ofthe gentleman. A young mans duty is to behave well to his parents at homeand to in love to all, and to cultivate the friendship of the good. If, when allthat is done, he has any energy to spare, then let him study the culturalarts.5 Confucius taught many topics around these subjects, but the mostimportance of these is the propriety, ritual and the Way of being a Gentleman. From these to achieve the Jen. Confucius had one overwhelming message: if we areto achieve a state of orderliness and peace, we need to return to traditionalvalues of virtue. These values are based entirely on one concept: Jen, which isbest, translated as humaneness. This humaneness is a relativelystrange concept to Western people, because it is not primarily a practicablevirtue. The rules of propriety offered a code of accepted behaviour thatdemonstrated to themselves and others that they were cultured and propergentlemen. For Confucius, the gentleman knew and behaved according to the rulesof propriety. In the first chapter of Analects, Yu-Tzu gives the value of therules of propriety. Among the functions of propriety the most valuable isthat it establishes harmony. The Way of the ancient kings from this harmony gotits beauty. It is the guiding principle of all things great and small. If thingsgo amiss, and he who knows the harmony tries to achieve it without regulating itby the rule s of propriety, they will still go amiss.6 Confucius explainswhat can happen if conduct is not guided by propriety. Courtesy notbounded by the rules of propriety becomes tiresome. Caution not bounded by therules of propriety becomes timidity, daring becomes insubordination, straightforwardness becomes rudeness.7 Nevertheless, Confucius did notbelieve in over-wallowing in ceremonies, and the feelings should be proper tothe situations. In ceremonies it is better to be sparing than extravagant. Funeral ceremonies should be observed in deep sorrow rather than in fear.8By the same mean, When substance, one becomes pedantic. When substance andrefinement are properly blended, then one is a gentleman.9 Confucius knewthat the ancient routes had been reduced in his time, and that such reductionwas politic. Were anyone today to serve his prince according to the fullrules of propriety he would be thought a sycophant.10 Many Confuciusstudents were interest to become officials in government and so as Confuciushimself, wanted the opportunity to advise rulers. His aim is to put hisknowledge into practice. A man may be able to recite the three hundredOdes; but, if when given a post in the government, he does not know how to act,or when sent on a mission to far parts he cannot answer specific questions, however extensive his knowledge may be, of what use is it to him.11Nevertheless, an official must improve himself and regulate his own conductbefore he could hope to rule over others. Hence , self-improvement wasprerequisite to engaging in politics. If a minister makes his own conductcorrect, he will have no difficulty in assisting in government. But if he cannotrectify himself, how can he possibly rectify others?12 Despite Confuciusillustrates wisdom and Jen as essential to ruling, they still must beaccomplished with dignity, and according to propriety. He explains why. He whosewisdom brings him into power, needs goodness to secure that power. Else, thoughhe gets it, he will certainly lose it. He whose wisdom brings him into power andwho has goodness to secure that power, if he has not dignity to approach thecommon people, they will not respects him. He whose wisdom brought him intopower, who has goodness to secure that power, and dignity to approach the commonpeople, if he handles them contrary to the rules of propriety, full excellenceis not reached. 13 Confucius believed that officials political action shouldfollow the Way. His actions will vary depending on whethe r the government isfollowing the Way or not. Confucius gives this advice for the differentcircumstances: Have sincere faith and love learning. Be not afraid to die forpursuing the good Way. Do not enter a state that pursues dangerous courses, norstay in a chaotic one. When the Way prevails under Heaven, then show yourself;when it does not prevail, then hide. When he Way prevails in your own land andyou are poor and in a humble position, are ashamed of yourself. When the Waydoes not prevail in your land and you are wealthy and in an honourable position, are ashamed of yourself. 14 These was someone misunderstand how to put the Wayinto practice. Chi Kang-tzu asked Confucius if it would be a good idea to killthose who had not the Way in order to help those who had the Way. Confuciussaid, You are there to rule, not to kill. If you desire what is good, thepeople will be good. The essence of the gentleman is that of wind; the essenceof small people is that of grass. And when a wind blows o ver the grass, then itbends.15 The proper relationship between a ruler and his minister is theruler should love his people, while the minister should be loyal to the ruler. .ue4798147d66d6d4ef9b6ce955e04a870 , .ue4798147d66d6d4ef9b6ce955e04a870 .postImageUrl , .ue4798147d66d6d4ef9b6ce955e04a870 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ue4798147d66d6d4ef9b6ce955e04a870 , .ue4798147d66d6d4ef9b6ce955e04a870:hover , .ue4798147d66d6d4ef9b6ce955e04a870:visited , .ue4798147d66d6d4ef9b6ce955e04a870:active { border:0!important; } .ue4798147d66d6d4ef9b6ce955e04a870 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ue4798147d66d6d4ef9b6ce955e04a870 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ue4798147d66d6d4ef9b6ce955e04a870:active , .ue4798147d66d6d4ef9b6ce955e04a870:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ue4798147d66d6d4ef9b6ce955e04a870 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ue4798147d66d6d4ef9b6ce955e04a870 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ue4798147d66d6d4ef9b6ce955e04a870 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ue4798147d66d6d4ef9b6ce955e04a870 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ue4798147d66d6d4ef9b6ce955e04a870:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ue4798147d66d6d4ef9b6ce955e04a870 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ue4798147d66d6d4ef9b6ce955e04a870 .ue4798147d66d6d4ef9b6ce955e04a870-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ue4798147d66d6d4ef9b6ce955e04a870:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Dracule EssayConfucius explains the proper behaviour of each. How can he be said trulyto love, who exacts no effort from the objects of his love? How can he be saidto be truly loyal, who refrains from admonishing the objects of hisloyalty?16 Confucius summarizes the art of the ruler as follows: A countryof a thousand war-chariots cannot be administered unless the ruler attendsstrictly to business, punctually observes his promises, is economical inexpenditure, loves the people, and uses the labour of the peasantry only at theproper times of year.17 The main subject matter in Confucius teachings was howto become a good and virtuous person by improving his own character. When Tzu-luasked if courage was to be esteemed by the gentleman, Confucius said, Thegentleman holds justice to be of highest importance. If a gentleman has couragebut neglects justice, he becomes insurgent. If an inferior man has courage butneglects justice, he becomes a thief. 18 Confucius main methods forachieving these virtues was learning. However, learning is not enough to fulfilthe need. People must be able to think. He who learns but does not thinkis lost; he who thinks but does not learn is in danger.19 Confucius alsomentions the friendship and the virtues of faithfulness and sincerity. First and foremost, be faithful to your superiors, keep all promises, refuse the friendship of all who are not like you; and if you have made amistake, do not be afraid of admitting the fact and amending your ways.20Confucius explain to his students which kinds of friends are beneficial andwhich are harmful to their characters. There are three sorts offriendships which are advantageous, and three which are injurious. Friendshipswith the upright, friendships with the sincere, and friendships with those wellinformed are advantageous. Friendships with those who flatter, friendships withthose of weak principle, and friendships with those talk cleverly areinjurious.21 The master also reveal there are three sorts of pleasureswhich are advantageous, and three which are injurious. Finding pleasure in thediscriminating study of ceremonies and music, finding pleasure in discussing thegood points in the conduct of others, and finding pleasure in having many wisefriends, these are advantageous. B ut finding pleasure in profligate enjoyments, finding pleasure in idle gadding about, and finding pleasure in feasting, theseare injurious.22 Ritual, was an important subject of study. It has beenillustrate by the poetry and music from the study of Confucius. It is also theWay of teaching people to the Gentleman level. If a man is not humane, what has he to do with ritual? If a man is not humane, what has he to do withmusic?23 Confucius had explain the relationship between ritual and Jen ingreater details. Yen Hui asked about humaneness. The master said, To subdueoneself and return to ritual is humane. If for one day a ruler could subduehimself and return to ritual, then all under Heaven would respond to thehumaneness in him. For does humaneness proceed from the man himself, or does itproceed from othersdo not speak what is contrary to ritual, and make nomovement, which is contrary to ritual.24 Poetry had broader humanistic valuesfor understanding oneself and other people, and even in creased ones awarenessof the natural world. My children, why do you not study the Book of Poetry? TheOdes serve to stimulate the mind. They may be used for purposes ofself-contemplation. They teach the art of sociability. They show how to regulatefeelings of resentment. From them you learn the more immediate duty of servingones father, and the remoter one of serving ones prince. From them we becomelargely acquainted with the names of birds, beasts, and plants.25Confucius was also a great lover of music and played some himself. However, theteaching of this art was apparently handed over to the Grand music master towhom Confucius gave his ideas on how music should follow the ideal of theancient pattern and then allow for some improvisation while still maintainingharmony. Their music in so far as one can find out about it began with astrict unison. Soon the musicians were given more liberty; but the tone remainedharmonious, brilliant, consistent, right on till the close.26 Ssu-maChien quotes this exact passage, but then goes on to give more information inregard to Confucius use of poetry and music. He once also said, After myreturn to Lu from Wei, I have been able to restore the musical tradition andclassify the music of sung and ya and restore the songs to their respectiveoriginal music. In the ancient times, there were over three thousandsongs, but Confucius took out the duplicates and selected those that were suitedto good form. The collection began with the songs of Chi and Houchi, coveredthe great period of the Shang and Chou kings and carried it down to the times ofthe tyrants Yu and Li. It begins with a song of marital love, and therefore itis said the song Kuan-chih heads the collection of Feng; Luming heads thecollection of the Little ya; and Chingmiao heads the collection of theSung. Confucius personally sang all the three hundred and five songs andplayed the music on a string instrument to make sure that it fitted in with thescore of hsiao, wu, ya, and sung. Through his efforts, the tradition of ancientrites and music was therefore rescued from oblivion and handed down toposterity, that they might help in the carrying out of this ideal of a kingsgovernment and in the teaching of the Six Arts.

Catcher In The Rye Thesis Paper Essays - Literary Realism

Catcher In The Rye Thesis Paper The Catcher in the Rye J. D. Salinger The Catcher in the Rye is a story about a young man named Holden Caulfield and the experiences that he faces after being dismissed from school. This book contains a great deal of symbolism, but it can very easily be missed in its simple story line. The story line itself is very basic, and I do not feel that the plot is very well written. When taken the time to appreciate it, this book is without a doubt a classic. As was stated in the first paragraph this story contains a great deal of symbolism. In the beginning of the story, when Mr. Spencer fails Holden, Holden is surprised about the failing grade and his mind begins to wander. He thinks about Central Park and how when the pond freezes over the duck leave. He shows a great deal of concern for what happens to the ducks. I believe that his concern for the ducks while the pond is frozen over symbolizes his concern for what he is going to do now that he has been dismissed from school. Much later on in the book Holden is talking with Horwitz, an angry cab driver, about what happens to the ducks and fish when the pond freezes over. Perhaps Holden is still unsure about what is in store for him and what he should do with his life. Holden's character does not relate to people very well. Throughout the story Holden is longing for a companion. He does not have a very good personality so instead he uses money to get the likeness of others. In many instances his buys drinks for women to win their respect, but most of the time he is not very interested. Although Holden is very generous, his generosity is limited to his wallet. However, Holden does care very much for his sister Phoebe. She is ten years old and is very charming and intelligent. Holden cares deeply for her because he lost his brother Allie to leukemia and he never wants to lose another sibling. Holden is also a very opinionated character. He is always concerned about other people's personalities. In one scene Holden was listening to a conversation a couple was having and he was disgusted on how funny looking the two were, but he thought it is good that they were together. While he was listening to them he was becoming irritated at the guy because he wo uld not stop talking about some pro-football game. I found it strange that he found it irritating because it was none of his business. Holden's way of thinking can sometimes be very strange. The Catcher in the Rye is overall a great book. J. D. Salinger did a great job of keeping the story simple yet interesting. Holden was a very interesting character that enhanced the book. After reading and analyzing this book I now understand why it is so renowned and respected.

Anthem Essay essays

Anthem Essay essays We made it. We created it. We brought it forth from the night (59). I believe about it because us humans create objects, and let it into the light by inventing it. So, I think in a way, all inventions are in the dark until we create them and bring them into the light. The book Anthem talks about how their minds create things, things that came from the light in their minds. I do not surrender my treasure, nor do I share them (95). We all have something that we call a treasure. Anthems treasure is the spirit, which all of us say different about and feels different about. I guess my treasure is a little bit of this and that. One is how I feel about certain things that I would rather die than expose. The other one is that I wish that I could just erase from my treasure. I do not know what causes it, all I know is that it is there, and shall always be too. What is my freedom if all the creatures even the boched and the impotent, are my masters (97) Anthem talks about how life is from taking orders from people while being like slaves. I feel like this all the time, of my life everyday. I feel this way because of all the objects we cling to. Objects such as school, water, food, and taxes. But, most of all what I get is that under someway somehow, we are all under some kind of slavery. Food and water are the two that I believe, is the worst type of slavery in this case. Some people stave themselves because of the way they think about themselves. While others, are just the opposite; they eat as much as they want, but still dont like the way they are. So, I guess it all goes hand-in-hand with the way we all think about ourselves. People dont like the way they look, so they do what they think is best. So maybe we are our own slaves to ourselves. ...

Review - Article Example or agricultural usage, the resultant man caused fire event releases massive amounts of bio-mass particulates and aerosols into the atmosphere above Amazon. The pressing concern is how this pollution is affecting cloud formations and how the loss of those clouds may be causing a shift in the weather patterns that could threaten the entire Amazonian ecosystem. Scientists Ilan Koren, and Lorraine Remer from the Weizmann Institute collaborated with Karla Longo from the Brazilian Center for Weather Forecasting and Climate Studies to construct a research model to better understand how smoke changes clouds in the Amazon. Smoke changes the size and number of cloud droplets, which affects the cloud density and the visual â€Å"brightness† of cloud formation. In theory this smoke layer, stabilizes and creates layers within atmosphere that directly suppresses updrafts that fuel cloud formation. Clouds are better at reflecting sunlight back into space than smoke, the scientist’s hypothesis considers that fires in the Amazon likely allow more solar energy than normal to enter the Earth’s climate system and are contributing to far reaching examples of climate change. The scientists collected data from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) system at NASA’s Goddard Space Center. The MODIS satellite data was compiled and analyzed over an 8 year period (from 1998 to 2006). The research initially focused on how smoke influenced clouds on a day to day basis. But, as the study progressed the scientists noted that since 2000, there were large fluctuations in the density and proliferation of smoke between the years. Some years were relatively clean, and in other years the atmosphere was being highly polluted by the smoke from the man caused fires. When this was noted the scientists bi-furcated the research and looked at additional MODIS data from AVHRR (Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer) to look at look at the daily and monthly averages in the number of

The effects of Employee satisfaction on Productivity, Performance, Research Paper

The effects of Employee satisfaction on Productivity, Performance, Customer satisfaction and the organization financial performance - Research Paper Example Any changes caused to any one of the above parameters may have strong impacts upon other parameters. Even though an organization may have lot of resources, human resources or the employees seem to be the most vital one because of the necessity of employees in mobilizing all the other organizational resources. In other words, employee performance and productivity is linked with the mission, vision, objectives and goals of the organization. Only the satisfied employee may deliver his maximum productivity for the betterment of the organization. Dissatisfied employees may not perform well and their reluctance in delivering the goods, may affect the customers of the organization. Dissatisfied employees may not treat the customers well which may result in dissatisfaction of the customers and the subsequent drop out of customers. The loss of customers may cause heavy financial damages to the organization. In short, employee performance can make or break an organization. This paper analyses the importance of employee satisfaction and its impacts on Productivity, Performance, Customer satisfaction and the organization financial performance.... re are direct and quantifiable links between customer service variables (such as satisfaction and loyalty), employee variables (such as satisfaction, enthusiasm, loyalty, commitment, capability, and internal service quality), and financial results (Linking Employee Satisfaction with Productivity, Performance, and Customer Satisfaction, 2003, p.1) Employees are the only active element in an organization. All the other organizational resources are passive and need the support of human element to deliver the goods. In other words employees are the drivers who drive the organizational resources in a particular direction to meet the organizational goals. If the drivers or the employees are incapable of driving the vehicle properly, it is difficult for the organization in reaching the target or meeting the goals. Only the satisfied drivers will keep the vehicle in good condition by driving the vehicle safely and effectively. Dissatisfied drivers will never bother much about the conditions of the vehicle or the negative impacts of crazy driving habits. Proper driving will help the vehicle owner to reduce maintenance cost of the vehicle which will increase his profits. â€Å"The Watson Wyatt Worldwide Human Capital Index study suggests that effective human resources practices lead to positive financial outcomes more often than positive financial outcomes lead to good practices† (Linking Employee Satisfaction with Productivity, Performance, and Customer Satisfaction, 2003, p.2). Many people often raise the question - which one evolved first; hen or egg? The same question is asked in the organizational world also – whether good human management practices lead to better organizational performances or better organizational performances lead to good human management practices? Shakespeares & Romeo and Juliet Essay Example for Free

Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet Essay The two films are very different from each other even though they are based on the same play written by William Shakespeare  From the beginning, the settings differ from each other. The Zeffirelli film, which was filmed in 1968 starts in a courtyard there is a market place, which looks like it represents Verona. The style is set between the 12th and 13th century, medieval and renaissance period. It also a lot more conventional to the Shakespeare play. The surrounding area is a walled town with narrow streets and high buildings, which creates tension. There is also a scene, which is on a beach; there is a proscenium arch. This is where Benvolio gets shot and dies; Benvolio was Romeos friend The Luhrman film, which was filmed in 1997, was set in an American Coastal city, it had a statue of Jesus Christ between two skyscrapers, a lot of traffic, hustle and bustle and skyscrapers around. One of the settings in the film was in a petrol station, which is busy and noisy; it is called Phoenix Gas. This has a symbolic meaning to it, which is Rise from the ashes. This is ironic as the station is about to be set alight. At the beginning of the films you can see that the two films contrast with each other by the opening music, sounds, and images. The Luhrmans opening is Loud, and Zeffirellis is quite and peaceful. The first we see of the two families in the Luhrman film is when the Montague Boys arrive in an open top car and the Capulets arrive in a gangster looking car. Abra Capulet has metal caps on his teeth with the word Sin engraved on them this is to create a gangster image. The market place in Zeffirellis film was much calmer than the petrol station in the Luhrman film. Luhrman used the petrol station because this is where people may encounter each other and it is part of a modern life. The Zeffirelli film was made in 1968 in a time where Hippies, love and peace, was around. You can see that this is reflected in this film because it does not seem as violent as the 1997 version. In the Luhrman film there was a lot more violence, the film was faster, louder, livelier because that was how peoples lives were at the time the film was made which is reflected in the film. Also people were used to action films and Luhrman wanted to make it relevant for a modern audience. As soon as both films begin there is immediate tension between the two different families. In the Luhrman film there is a news report, which explains what is happening between the two families. There were several different newspapers, which come up, Capulet Vs Montagues, and In Fair Verona. These headings reflect the lines from the prologue, which are being read as the news. This gives the first impression that the two families are feuding with each other. In both films religion plays a part in the films In the Luhrman film Tybalt has a picture of Jesus on his waistcoat. Throughout the film there is religious images. For example in the montage at he beginning there are religious images flashed. Also there is a scene, which in which you see two skyscrapers one which is the Montagues and the other is the Capulets in between there is a statue of Jesus Christ. This shows that they think they are bigger than God and more important than religion, however religion still plays a part in their lives. In both of the films the main characters are Romeo and Juliet. The actors give the impression that their characters are natural, young and in love. In both of the films there are also two main families that are feuding with each other, the Montagues, which is Romeos family, and the Capulets, which is Juliets family.

Essay --

This paper explores the relationship of the pathogenicity of the opportunistic bacterium P. aeruginosa specifically related to the pathophysiology of cystic fibrosis and the impact they have on patient care and nursing. Cystic fibrosis is a life-threatening, immunosuppressing genetic disorder unto itself, but is a primary cause of opportunistic infection. Studies show that  ¬P. aeruginosa infections, common and often chronic and lethal in CF cases, are most often established between ages 0-3 years in a CF patient and develop undetected until the infection is well established and difficult to treat. Because of physical complications related to a child’s age, immunosuppression exhibited by those affected with cystic fibrosis, versatile nature of the pathogen’s virulence and wide array of habitable environments, and comorbid factors the pathogen contributes to mortality among infected hosts, it is imperative that thorough diagnostic, preventative, and treatment measures be taken regularly and begun as early as possible with a cystic fibrosis infant in order to reduce prevalence and incidence of chronic lung infection. Nursing responsibilities include administration of long-term therapeutic medications, parental teaching, lifestyle planning, maintaining optimal health and vigil monitoring in the clinical setting, referrals, and improving the affected child’s overall growth, development, and happiness. â€Æ' P. aeruginosa in Young Children with Cystic Fibrosis The nature of an immunosuppressing disease among infants invites infection from bacteria normally a part of our normal flora. P. aeruginosa, a common hydrophilic bacterium found in most environments high in moisture, exhibits little virulence until it successfully invades the tissu... ... a necessity, especially during times of hot weather, fever, and excessive exercise in order to prevent hyponatremia. (Nettina, 2010) The nurse should actively encourage the parents to seek ongoing education about their child’s disease and share CF information with family members, teachers, school nurse, and anyone who would care for the child. It may be beneficial to refer the family for social work or support groups dedicated to CF. The nurse should also stress the importance of regular medical care and to pay attention to advances in treatment, recommending several pulmonary function tests, respiratory cultures, and liver enzyme analyses per year. Parent education regarding proactive roles in their child’s health care generally increases the child’s quality of life and longevity and promotes optimal development and growth. The Amish Culture

The Amish Culture The Amish are a fascinating people. They live surrounded by cities full of technology. Yet they live without automobiles, electricity, and most modern comforts that are taken for granted by many. Donald Kraybill asks the question â€Å"How is it that a tradition-laden people who spurn electricity, computers, automobiles, and higher education are not merely surviving but are, in fact, thriving in the midst of modern life? † Though they do not have all of the technology that we take for granted, they live richer lives than many non-Amish people. ecause gender relations are accepted amongst others in the community, they have strong beliefs, traditions and values, and kinship is important. In the Amish community, they rely heavily on their agriculture as a mode of subsistence. This is known as being an agrarian society. Though they have other means of sustenance, they recognize the importance of agriculture to the community. Amish culture does not use electricity or other modern conveniences. This makes the farming a longer process, as this is their means of survival. They have other means for livelihood but farming is their main job. Some build furniture to sell to the surrounding communities. Others will farm for non-amish employers. â€Å"Some stereotypes of Amish life imply that they reject technology and live in a nineteenth-century cocoon. Such images are false. The Amish adopt technology selectively, hoping that the tools they use will build community rather than harm it. In short, they prefer technology that preserves social capital, rather than depletes it. †(Kraybill, 2001). In the technology laden world today, it makes sense that a culture that only uses certain technologies selectively would rely heavily on the land to provide. The Amish have traditions that are considered strange to many people, in addition to the lack of technology. The baptized members of the Amish church marry other baptized members of the church. This does not mean necessarily that cousins marry cousins. While this does happen, some Amish women may choose to leave one community for another. This is often done because the men inherit the family land. The men inherit the land because the Amish culture is a patriarchal culture. The marraiges are not arranged but the parents must give approval. Right before the marriage, the couple is â€Å"announced† and the preparations for the wedding begin. After the wedding, the man will start to grow out his beard to signify his marital status. Another well known tradition is the Amish barn raising. A barn raising is a gathering of men in the community to build a barn for a fellow member of the community. It is used as a way to not only accomplish a task but to also socialize. The Amish community is known for their desire to help one another and reinforce the sense of community. The barn raising is known as a â€Å"frolic† in the Amish culture. There are many men assisting in the building. In addition, the families know that in the future, if there is ever a time they need assistance with something, the community will be there to help. Frolics are not only reserved for the men. The women in the community get together for quilting, shucking, or canning. The traditions and core beliefs were founded in Europe by Jacob Amman based on the writings of Menno Simons, the founder of the Mennonite movement. These beliefs are held fast by every member of the Amish community. The basic religious beliefs are Christian in nature, such as a belief in Heaven and Hell. The Amish believe, however, that salvation is not guaranteed. Upon death, God weighs the deeds and life of the person to determine their worthiness for Heaven. Baptism is done when an adult in the Amish community decides to give themselves wholly to the church. It is symbolic of their commitment. â€Å"Amish youth decide if they want to join the church in their late teens and early twenties, and if they choose to be baptized, they submit themselves to the order of the church for the rest of their lives. In doing so, candidates make a confession of faith and agree to comply with the order of the Amish community, or the Ordnung, an unwritten tradition that spells out expected behaviors and regulations. Church members who break the commitment and refuse to repent and confess their sins are excommunicated and â€Å"shunned. † The Pennsylvania Amish try to persuade the wayward to cooperate with the church, but those who continue to be disobedient must be banned from fellowship in order to maintain the purity of the church. The shunned are prohibited from engaging in any social interaction, cut off from all close friends and associates. Shunning happens infrequently, although it serves as an effective form of social control for the Amish that preserves their spiritual purity. † (http://www. padutchcountry. om/towns-and-heritage/amish-country/amish-religious-traditions. asp) The youth in the Amish communities make this decision by participating in Rumspringa. This translates to running around. Around the age of sixteen, the Amish adolescent participates in activities that are not allowed by a baptized member of the church. These are typical â€Å"English† behaviors s uch as drinking alcohol, wearing â€Å"English† clothing, and not have a requirement to attend the church. Not all youths choose to have a Rumspringa. Some, on the other hand, choose to leave the community for the year and experience life outside of the community. Most return to the Amish culture and devote their lives to the Amish way. Most Americans would not be able to live without the modern conveniences to which they grown accustomed. The Amish are simply fascinating with their plain living and culture rich with tradition. Though they do not have all of the technology that we take for granted, they live richer lives than many non-Amish people. because gender relations are accepted amongst others in the community, they have strong beliefs, traditions and values, and kinship is important. Self Consciousness Burden Or Benefit Essay - 2230 Words

Romantic Self Consciousness: Burden or Benefit? Internalization and self-consciousness seem to be at the root of Romantic poetry. The first generation of Romantic poets struggled to comprehend the complexity of mortality, the natural world and the imagination, thus challenging and inspiring them to express their personal understandings through poetry. Common solutions among the poets came through internalizing their beliefs or to try to escape the burden of self-consciousness. William Blake, William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge are similar in this way, yet they each have different poetic styles. William Blake, although not religious, has a reputation as a mythologist. But he has written in such a way that seems as an escape of self-consciousness. He distinguishes body and soul as one, as well as sight and insight as one, emphasizing the power and importance of the imagination. â€Å"The Book of Thel,† embodies Blake’s common theme of the contrast between innoc ence and experience. He imagines that nature is personified, and that the answers to his deepest questions can be answered by nature’s spoken word. Thel’s character represents Blake wanting to escape the knowledge of mortality and the negative correlation between innocence and experience. She continues to ask personified aspects of nature how they cope with knowing they are mortal. â€Å"I charge thee tell to me,/ Why thou complainest not when in hour thou fade away† (page 65, lines 1-2).
